7 Signs Your Nervous System Is Stuck in Survival Mode — and What You Can Do About It
Updated: Aug 18

Have you ever said, “I just don’t feel like myself anymore”?
Maybe you’re exhausted, but you can’t relax. Your mind keeps racing. Little things seem
to overwhelm you. You’re more emotional or irritable than usual, and even after a good night’s sleep, you still feel tired.
You may wonder: What is wrong with me?
Here’s something I want you to consider: Your nervous system may not be broken. It may simply be stuck in survival mode.
Your nervous system is designed to protect you. When your brain senses danger or stress, it activates responses that prepare your body to deal with whatever is happening.
That’s incredibly useful when there’s an actual emergency.
But sometimes the emergency ends…and the body doesn’t completely get the message.
Prolonged stress, grief, emotional upheaval, chronic pain, illness, caregiving, work pressures, financial worries, poor sleep, and simply carrying too much for too long can keep your internal alarm system working overtime.
Eventually, survival mode can begin to feel normal.
Here are seven signs that may tell you it’s time to give your nervous system some extra care.
The 7 Signs Your Nervous System Is Stuck in Survival Mode
1. You’re Tired — But You Can’t Relax
You finally get a chance to sit down, yet your body doesn’t seem to know how to stop.
You may feel restless, guilty for doing nothing, or compelled to keep checking your phone, doing chores, thinking about tomorrow, or finding the next thing that needs your attention. Your body may be physically tired while your nervous system remains alert.
That’s not the same thing as rest.
Sometimes learning to relax actually requires practice.
2. Little Things Suddenly Feel Like Big Things
The email you normally would have handled without thinking feels overwhelming.
Someone asks you a simple question and you snap.
You can’t find your keys and suddenly you’re ready to cry.
It isn't necessarily that the little thing is so stressful.
Your stress bucket may already be full.
When your system is carrying too much, it doesn’t take much additional stress to make that bucket overflow. Recognizing this can help you stop judging yourself and start asking a more useful question:
“What am I carrying right now?”
3. Your Mind Won’t Shut Off
You replay conversations.
You worry about things that haven’t happened.
You mentally go through tomorrow’s to-do list while trying to fall asleep.
You find yourself thinking about the same problem over and over without actually solving anything.
This constant mental activity can be another sign that your brain is staying on alert.
Your brain thinks it is helping you by anticipating problems and searching for solutions.
Unfortunately, it can also leave you mentally exhausted.
4. Your Body Feels Like It’s Always “On”
Stress isn’t only something we experience emotionally.
We experience it physically.
You might notice your shoulders creeping toward your ears, your jaw tightening, your breathing becoming shallow, your stomach feeling unsettled, or your muscles remaining tense. Sometimes we become so accustomed to holding tension that we don't even realize we're doing it.
Try checking in with yourself right now.
Drop your shoulders.
Unclench your jaw.
Soften your hands.
Take one slow breath.
You may be surprised by how much tension your body was holding.
5. Your Sleep Has Changed
Stress and sleep can create a frustrating cycle.
You need sleep because you're exhausted.
But you're too “wired” to sleep well.
You may have difficulty falling asleep, wake during the night, or sleep for hours and still wake feeling tired.
Your body is trying to rest while part of your nervous system is still keeping watch.
That is one reason calming the nervous system before bedtime can be just as important as what you do once your head hits the pillow.
6. You Don’t Feel Like Yourself Anymore
This is one I hear often. “I just want to feel like myself again.”
Maybe you aren't enjoying the things you once enjoyed.
You're less patient.
Less motivated.
Less social.
Everything feels like effort.
You may even look at your life and think, I should be happy. Why don't I feel happy?
When your energy has been devoted to coping and getting through the day, there may simply be less available for creativity, connection, play, and joy.
That doesn't mean those parts of you have disappeared.
They may just have been pushed into the background while your body concentrated on getting you through.
7. You’re Surviving Your Days Instead of Living Them
You wake up.
You do what needs to be done.
You take care of everyone and everything.
You get through another day.
Then you do it again tomorrow.
From the outside, you may appear to be functioning perfectly well.
But inside, you're thinking:
“I can't keep doing this.”
That may be your body asking for something different.
Not necessarily a dramatic life overhaul.
Sometimes the first step is simply learning how to create small moments when your brain and body can stop preparing for the next emergency.
Survival Mode Is a Response — Not Your Identity
This is one of the most important ideas behind my Become Your Own Therapist approach. Your nervous system isn't your enemy.
It's your protection system.
It has been doing its best to help you cope with everything life has handed you.
But patterns can become habits — including stress patterns.
The encouraging part is that our brains and nervous systems are adaptable.
Through repetition, we can begin practicing different responses.
We can learn to notice tension sooner.
We can interrupt automatic stress patterns.
We can deliberately create moments of calm.
And over time, we can become better at recognizing what our own bodies need.
You don't need to master everything today.
You just need somewhere to begin.

The 2-Minute “I’m Safe Right Now” Reset
Put down whatever you're doing for just two minutes.
Place one hand gently over your heart or chest.
Let your shoulders drop.
Unclench your jaw.
Slowly breathe in through your nose.
Then breathe out gently, allowing your exhale to be comfortable and unhurried.
As you breathe, quietly tell yourself:
“In this moment, I am safe.”
Take another slow breath.
Look around the room and notice three things you can see.
Notice the surface supporting your body.
Feel your feet against the floor.
And remind yourself:
“I don't have to solve everything in this moment.”
Continue breathing comfortably for another minute.
That's it.
You haven't ignored your responsibilities.
You haven't pretended your problems don't exist.
You've simply taken two minutes to interrupt the constant go-go-go signal and give your mind and body an opportunity to settle.
And those small moments matter.
Becoming Your Own Therapist Starts With Awareness
You don't become your own therapist by knowing every mind-body technique or never feeling stressed again. You begin by becoming curious about yourself.
What am I feeling?
What is my body doing?
What triggered this response?
What would help me right now?
Instead of automatically reacting, you begin learning to respond.
That is where change begins.
One breath.
One choice.
One new response at a time.
And perhaps today, instead of asking “What's wrong with me?”, try asking:
“What does my nervous system need from me right now?”
You might be surprised by the answer.
